General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pronunciation still needs fine-tuning. Comments and corrections welcome.

The woodpeckers in Mongolian are known as Тоншуул tonshuul or Тогшуурга togshuurag, related to the verbs тонших tonshikh 'to peck, to tap' and тогших togshikh 'to knock, to tap'. The less common term Овууна ovuunn is used for one particular type of woodpecker. The wryneck is known as the Гоётуул goituul, related to the noun гоёо goio meaning 'crick'.

Regularised names:

In the original official names of the woodpeckers, all but the wryneck were known as Тоншуул tonshuul. In the 2007 list, each genus gets its own name:

Genus Old New
Jynx (Wrynecks) Гоётуул goituul Гоётуул goituul
Dendrocopus Тоншуул tonshuul Тоншуур tonshuur
Picoides Тоншуул tonshuul Овууна ovuunn
Dryocopus Тоншуул tonshuul Тогшуурга togshuurag
Picus Тоншуул tonshuul Тоншуул tonshuul

The new species names make use of existing names, except for Тоншуур tonshuur, which is not listed in dictionaries as meaning 'woodpecker'. The meaning given is 'battering ram'.
