General
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
In Chinese, the honey guides are literally known as 响蜜䴕 'guide honey woodpecker'. (If you can't see the character, place your mouse over the top.) Only one honeyguide is found in China's southwest. Unlike their African cousins, the honey guides of Asia do not have the habit of leading people or animals to honey. Accordingly, the Chinese name is clearly based on English, not on popular local usage (if this exists).
