General
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The cisticolas are known as 扇尾莺 'fan-tailed warblers' in China. The prinias are known as 鹪莺 'wren warblers'. The genus Rhopophilus of northern China is known as 山鹛 'mountain babbler'.
All three are 'ornithologists' names'. 莺 , originally meaning 'oriole', is used for warblers in general under the influence of Japanese. The name 鹪莺 is composed of the first syllable of the word for 'wren' (鹪鹩 ) combined with 莺 . This artifice relies rather heavily on the Chinese writing system, which splits the word 鹪鹩 'wren', to all intents and purposes a single word, into two characters. (See also the wren babblers.) The White-browed Chinese Warbler uses the character 鹛 , a recent creation specifically coined for the babblers based on the name of the Hwamei.
