General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

The Taiwanese use 水薙鳥 shuǐ-tì-niǎo for the shearwaters and 穴鳥 xué-niǎo for the petrels. Both are borrowed from Japanese, but Taiwanese naturalists have expanded 穴鳥 xué-niǎo to cover all the 'petrels' in the group. In Japanese, 穴鳥 ana-dori is restricted to Bulwer's Petrel. The Japanese verb 薙ぐ nagu, as found in mizu-nagi-dori, means 'mow' or shear'. The character is rare enough in Japanese but even less often encountered in Chinese, where it's pronounced . (In the normal written language, this character is usually replaced by the more common character , also read and meaning 'to shave', in Mainland China.)

Taiwanese usage diverges widely from that of the Mainland, which has been regularised based on the term , a rare ancient name for a kind of water bird. (Since the traditional character sets on computers lack the character , in this list we use the simplified form.)

Notes

Under Sibley and Monroe, the Procellariinae (fulmars and shearwaters) are a subfamily of the Procellariiidae. Other subfamilies are the Diomedeinae (albatrosses) and the Hydrobatinae (petrels).
