The Japanese name for the majority of the procellariids is ミズナギドリ mizu-nagi-dori or 'water-shearing bird', written 水薙鳥. The middle character 薙 nagi is from the verb 薙ぐ nagu 'to mow' or 'to shear'. Unlike English, which divides naming between 'petrels' and 'shearwaters', the same Japanese name is used for both types, excepting Bulwer's Petrel, which is known as アナドリ ana-dori or 'hole bird' (穴鳥 in characters), presumably for its breeding habits.

The Fulmar is known by its English name, rendered into Japanese in a most ingenious way as フルマカモメ Furuma kamome or 'fulmar gull', written 古間鴎. The first two characters Furuma (literally 'old room') are a family or place name in Japanese. Kamome or 'gull' is added (somewhat inaccurately) to show that a seabird is involved. So ingeniously has the name been adapted that native speakers are likely to mistake Furuma kamome for a native Japanese word. This method of naturalising foreign words is now quite dated in Japanese, being more typical of the 19th century. If borrowed today 'fulmar' would be rendered in katakana, written フルマー furumā to indicate a conventionally lengthened final vowel, and there would definitely be no kamome.

The Japanese naming, read the Chinese way, is still in use in Taiwan (with some modifications) but has been superseded by regularised terminology in China.
