The Mongolian name of the cuckoos is the onomatopoeic Хөхөө khökhöö or (less commonly) Хүхээ khükhee. An alternative name for the cuckoos is Шовшуур shovshuur or Шогшуур shogshuur.

The Buryat name is Хүхы khükhi.

Хөхөө сар khökhöö sar 'cuckoo month' is the month of May.
