The Grass Owl (or Eastern Grass Owl) found in Taiwan is known officially as 草鴞 'grass owl'. This gives every appearance of being a direct translation from English, using the literary term 鴞 that Chinese naturalists prefer for naming owls. The folk name for the species appears to be 猴面鷹 'monkey-faced hawk'.
