General
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
Where the Strigidae are popularly called 猫头鹰 māo-tóu-yīng 'cat-headed hawk', the Tytonidae seem to be popularly identified with monkeys, with names like 猴面鹰
hóu-miàn-yīng
'monkey-faced hawk'.
Ornithologists, on the other hand, use direct calques on the English names, including 仓鸮 cāng-xiāo 'barn owl' and 草鸮 cǎo-xiāo 'grass owl'. The term 鸮 xiāo is almost purely a written, not a popular term.
