Taiwan has only seven phasianid species, but fully three of those are endemics.

Originally the Taiwan Hill Partridge was called 深山竹雞 zhú-jī 'bamboo fowl' following Japanese usage. However, recently Taiwan has shifted to the official Mainland name, which uses 鷓鴣 zhègū for the genera Francolinus and Arborophila and restricts 竹雞 zhú-jī to Bambusicola. (By contrast, in Japanese, 鷓鴣 shako is used for the genera Francolinus, Alectoris, Tetraophasis and Tetraogallus).
The official name of Syrmaticus mikado has also been changed from 帝雉

'emperor pheasant' to the more narrowly descriptive 黑長尾雉
hēi cháng-wěi-zhì
'black long-tailed pheasant', again the standard Mainland term. Syrmaticus mikado was discovered scientifically by the British collector Walter Goodfellow in 1906. Goodfellow identified the new species from black and white feathers that the local ethnic group around Alishan, the Tsou, used to decorate their hair. Given that Taiwan was a Japanese possession at the time, and possibly mindful of the vogue enjoyed by the word 'Mikado', Goodfellow decided to name the bird in honour of the Japanese emperor. (See here). Until recently, the Taiwanese official name preserved Goodfellow's name in Chinese form (reading 帝雉 mikado kiji as dì-zhì or 'emperor pheasant'). However, what may have been innocuous enough in 1906 is total anathaema to modern Chinese sensibilities, which are not only heavily focussed on reclaiming territories (like Taiwan) held by the last Chinese dynasty but also have a strong anti-Japanese streak.
