Taiwan has only seven phasianid species, but fully three of those are endemics.

Originally the Taiwan Hill Partridge was called 竹雞 zhú-jī 'bamboo-fowl/chicken' following Japanese usage. However, recently Taiwan has shifted to the official Mainland name, which uses 鷓鴣 zhègū for the genera Francolinus and Arborophila and uses 竹雞 zhú-jī only for Bambusicola. (By contrast, in Japanese, 鷓鴣 shako is used for the genera Francolinus, Alectoris, Tetraophasis and Tetraogallus).
The official name of Syrmaticus mikado has also been changed from 帝雉 dì-zhì 'emperor pheasant' to the more descriptive 黑長尾雉 hēi cháng-wěi-zhì 'black long-tailed pheasant', again the standard Mainland term. Syrmaticus mikado was discovered scientifically in 1906 by the British collector Walter Goodfellow. Goodfellow identified the new species from black and white feathers that the local ethnic group around Alishan, the Tsou, used to decorate their hair. Given that Taiwan was a Japanese possession at the time, and possibly mindful of the vogue enjoyed by the word 'Mikado', Goodfellow decided to name the bird in honour of the Japanese emperor. (See here). Until recently, the Taiwanese official name preserved Goodfellow's name in Chinese form (reading 帝雉 mikado kiji as dì-zhì or 'emperor pheasant'). However, what may have been innocuous enough in 1906 is total anathaema to modern Chinese sensibilities.
