The Phylloscopidae are a result of the break-up of the large Sylviidae (Old World warbler) assemblage. (Others include the Locustellidae, Acrocephalidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)

Ornithological names

All members of the Phylloscopidae, regardless of genus, are known in Chinese as 柳鶯 liǔ-yīng 'willow warbler', based on the old English ornithological term 'willow warbler'.

The traditional meaning of yīng in Chinese is oriole, and this is still maintained in non-ornithological contexts, particularly poetic usage. The modern ornithological usage referring to the warblers originated in Japan. As the Black-naped Oriole is confined to Japan's remote western islands, the native Japanese Bush Warbler or uguisu (Horornis diphone) came to culturally identifed with the oriole due to its song, and its name came to be written with the character (see 'Of Orioles and Warblers'). In more modern times the Japanese Bush Warbler gave its name to the Sylviidae, or 鶯科 uguisu-ka, and this was borrowed into Chinese in the 1920s in its written form. The name yīng was then given to the sylviid warblers in general.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.
