General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The general name for 'pheasants' is キジ kiji (written or 雉子 in Chinese characters), which normally refers in its unmarked form to Phasianus colchicus, the Common Pheasant. The quails are known as ウズラ uzura (written ).

Other names:

コジュケイ
(小綬鶏)
ko-jukei
'small jukei' Chinese Bamboo Partridge (Bambusicola thoracica) ジュケイ jukei is used in Japanese names for exotic tragopans.
ヤマドリ

ライチョウ
(雷鳥)
raichō
'thunder-bird' Ptarmigan or Grouse Applied more widely than the equivalent Chinese word 雷鸟 (雷鳥) léi-niǎo, which has been restricted in usage by the scientific classification.

ニワトリ niwa-tori, literally 'garden bird', written , is the domesticated fowl or chicken. The meat of the domestic fowl is known as tori-niku, or 'bird meat'.

Although the word 绶鸡 (綬雞) shòu-jī is not found in Mainland China, the Japanese word jukei (綬鶏) is pretty clearly from Chinese. Chinese has the term 寿鸡 (壽雞) shòu-jī 'longevity fowl' (Cabot's Tragopan), written with different characters but pronounced the same. Interchangeability between these two characters in Chinese bird names is not unusual. Another alternative name for Cabot's tragopan is 吐绶鸟 (吐綬鳥) tǔ-shòu-niǎo and, interestingly, one name for the turkey in Chinese is 吐绶鸡 (吐綬雞) tǔ-shòu-jī.

In Japanese haiku, the Common pheasant kiji or きぎす kigisu, is a season word for spring.
