The minivets and cuckoo-shrikes are known in Taiwan as 山椒鳥 'prickly ash birds'. The name gives the appearance of having been borrowed from Japanese.
Mainland Chinese ornithologists have separated the cuckoo-shrikes (Coracina) from the minivets (Pericrocotus), calling the Coracina and other genera 鵑鵙 , quite literally 'cuckoo shrikes'. This word follows the English naming. Taiwan has adopted this naming for the Pied Triller (Lalage nigra), which only recently entered Taiwanese bird lists.
