The nuthatches are known in Mongolia as Тоншголжин toŋshgoljiŋ. This name is related to the word Тоншуул toŋshuul meaning 'woodpecker'. In the traditional script the nuthatch name differs from that of the woodpecker only in the addition of the suffix -жин -jiŋ.

Mongolian names for the Wallcreeper are modelled on other languages. It is known as the Хэрмийн бялзуухай khermiŋ byalzuukhai or 'wall finch' in the Mongolian ornithological names. Бялзуухай byalzuukhai, which is normally a general catchall for all kinds of small passerine songbirds in everyday Mongolian, has thus been made the ornithological name of the genus Tichodroma. Хэрэм kherem refers to the walls of a castle or fortification (including walls such as the Great Wall of China).

Inner Mongolia

In Inner Mongolia the nuthatches are known by several names, including Шарцгай shartsgai, Шогшуур shogshuur, and Модон шогшоо modon shogshoo 'tree shogshoo'. Of these, Шогшуур shogshuur is a variant form of the word Шовшуур shovshuur, which is used for the cuckoos. Модон шогшоо modon shogshoo could possibly be interpreted as 'tree trotter' since шогшоо shogshoo has the meaning 'to run with little steps', which nuthatches are noted for doing.

The Inner Mongolian ornithological name of the wallcreepers was Хэрмийн тойруул khermiŋ toiruul 'wall circler', a direct translation from the Chinese name. In Inner Mongolian, тойруул toiruul 'circle' is incidentally also a term used for a 'military patrol'. Our more recent standard source (33) uses the term Шарцгай shartsgai 'nuthatch'.
