General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Many Kazakh, Turkish, and Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The general Мongolian word for 'crow' is Хэрээ kheree.

Rooks are specifically known as Турлиах turliakh or Турлааг turlaag.

Jackdaws have a variety of names: Туу tuu, Алагтуу alagtuu 'motley tuu', Алаг дуу alag duu 'motley duu' and (in Inner Mongolia) Таага taag, Алаг таага alag taag 'motley taag' or Алаг хонг alag khoŋg 'motley khong'.

The Raven is known as the Хон хэрээ khoŋ kheree 'cawing crow' or (in Inner Mongolian dictionaries) Хонг khoŋg.

In addition, Inner Mongolian dictionaries give Алаг таага 'motley taag' for the (extralimital to Mongolia) Collared Crow and Хар таага khar taag 'black taag' for the Carrion Crow.

The Common Magpie is known as Шаазгай shaazgai, which is also extended to other magpies, the Nutcracker, and the European Jay. Alternative forms of the name are Цанцаахай tsantsaakhai and Цагцхай tsagtskhai.

The Jay (Garrulus) is known as the Ятга шаазгай yatag shaazgai 'zither magpie'. In Inner Mongolian dictionaries, the Jay is given as Ид хэрээ id kheree (хэрээ kheree = 'crow') or Ит it.

The Siberian Jay (Perisoreus) is distinguished as Дуудууш duuduush under the official names, although this term is generally not found in dictionaries.

The unique local Ground-jays are known as Жороо joroo, literally 'amble', which appears to refer to the fast ambling stride of a horse. The Chough is known as Жунгаа juŋgaa.

Buryat: The Buryat name for the crow is Хирээ khiree; that for the jackdaw is Алаг туун alag tuun 'motley tuun'; that for the rook is Турлааг turlaag; that for the magpie is Шаазгай shaazgai.
