The Waxwings are known in Mongolian as Энхэт бялзуухай enkhet byalzuukhai 'peace finch'. The word бялзуухай byalzuukhai is a general term for all kinds of small songbirds in Mongolian which we gloss here as finch. The name is an early calque on the Chinese name, 太平鸟 tàipíng-niǎo 'peace bird' that is already found in the Imperial Pentaglot Manchu Mirror of 1805 (37).

In more modern ornithological naming, the two species of waxwing were originally distinguished as Энхэт бялзуухай enkhet byalzuukhai 'peace finch' (unmarked) for Bombycilla garrulus and Хар мөрний энхэт бялзуухай khar mörni enkhet byalzuukhai 'black-shouldered peace finch' for Bombycilla japonicus.

In the 2007 "binomial" list, the base name is combined into one word, Энхэтбялзуухай eŋkhet-byalzuukhai 'peace finch', and Russian / international naming has been selectively adopted to distinguish the two species into the Siberian (Шивэр shiver) and Japanese (Наран naraŋ) Waxwings.

Inner Mongolian

While the Imperial Pentaglot (37) used Энхэт бялзуухай enkhet byalzuukhai 'peace finch' as a general name for the waxwings, it distinguished the two species as Шар энхэт shar enkhet 'yellow peace' (Bombycilla garrulus) and Улаан энхэт ulaan enkhet 'red peace' (Bombycilla japonica) based on the colour of the tips of the tail feathers. Modern Inner Mongolian ornithological naming of waxwing species originally preserved this naming.

However, recent ornithological naming has followed Mongolia in adopting the full name, Энхэт бялзуухай enkhet byalzuukhai 'peace finch', in species names, and has abandoned the traditional red/yellow distinction at Bombycilla japonica, with a choice of names based on international naming ("Japanese Waxwing") and Chinese naming ("Little Waxwing").
