The waxwings are known as 連雀 (literally meaning 'linked sparrow', sometimes alternatively pronounced ) in Taiwan. While the name itself appears to be of Chinese origin, Taiwan's use of it seems to be due to Japanese influence. On the Mainland the waxwings are known as 太平鳥 'peace birds'. In official Mainland bird naming, 連雀 is applied specifically to the Hypocolius, a waxwing-like bird of the Middle East.
Colloquially, the two waxwing species are known as 十二黄 'twelve yellow' and 十二紅 'twelve red' respectively because of the twelve yellow or red feathers at the end of their tails.
