The waxwings are known as 連雀 lián-què (literally meaning 'linked sparrow', sometimes alternatively pronounced lián-qiǎo) in Taiwan. While the name itself appears to be of Chinese origin, Taiwan's use of it seems to be due to Japanese influence. On the Mainland the waxwings are known as 太平鳥 tàipíng-niǎo 'peace birds'. In official Mainland bird naming, 連雀 lián-què is applied specifically to the Hypocolius, a waxwing-like bird of the Middle East.

Colloquially, the two waxwing species are known as 十二黄 shí-èr huáng 'twelve yellow' and 十二紅 shí-èr hóng 'twelve red' respectively because of the twelve yellow or red feathers at the end of their tails.
