In Japanese, the waxwings are known as レンジャク renjaku, written 連雀. This is a Chinese-style compound (on-reading) meaning literally 'linked sparrow' (signification unclear), suggesting a Chinese origin, but the name is largely neglected in Mainland sources. (連雀 is used on Taiwan for the waxwings, but Mainland ornithologists have appropriated the name to refer to the Hypocolius, a waxwing-like bird of the Middle East).
Cultural:
In traditional poetry, 連雀 renjaku is a season-word for autumn.
