General
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The waxwings are officially known as 太平鸟 'peace birds' in China and 连雀 , which literally means something like 'linked sparrow', in Taiwan. They are also known as 十二黄 'twelve yellow' and 十二红 'twelve red' because of the twelve yellow or red feathers at the end of their tails. The two species often flock together. (Note: the Taiwanese name 连雀 is used by Mainland ornithologists to refer to the Hypocolius, a waxwing-like bird of the Middle East).
