The Japanese name of the Dollarbird is ブッポウソウ buppōsō, or 'Buddha-law-monk', written 仏法僧. The Buddha, the law, and the monks are known as the 'three treasures' of Buddhism. The name is a Chinese-style compound word (i.e., it is formed as a Chinese word and read in the on reading) from the vocabulary of Buddhism, which originally entered Japan from Chinese. It is not clear whether the name as used for the birds is of Chinese or Japanese origin.
The ブッポウソウ buppōsō is referred to as the 'Buddha-law-monk in form' (姿の仏法僧 sugata no buppōsō), as opposed to the scops owl ko-no-ha zuku (Otus scops), whose call sounds like buppōsō and is known as the 'Buddha-law-monk in voice' (声の仏法僧 koe no buppōsō).
