General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The frogmouths have a confusing variety of names that differ according to the source: 蟆口鸱 má-kǒu-chī 'toad-mouthed owl', 蛙口鸱 wā-kǒu-chī 'frog-mouthed owl', 蛙嘴鸱 wā-zuǐ chī 'frog-mouthed owl', 蛙嘴夜鸱 wā-zuǐ yè-chī 'frog-mouthed night-owl', or 蛙嘴夜鹰 wā-zuǐ yè-yīng 'frog-mouthed night-hawk'. chī is a literary Chinese word that originally referred to the goshawks but is now applied to the owls. The frogmouths were originally known as 夜鹰 yè-yīng 'night hawks', using the same name as that for the nightjars. The above names were coined, presumably on the basis of English 'frogmouth', in order to distinguish the frogmouths from the nightjars. None of them is a familiar or common name.
