The popular and ornithological general name for crane is นกกระเรียน nók krà-rian or นกกะเรียน nók kà-rian 'crane'. This general name is extended from the species-name for Grus antigone, the only native crane in most of mainland Southeast Asia.

Thai นกก(ร)ะเรียน nók k(r)à-rian is etymologically related to the crane names in other regional languages. Its particular shape appears to be a reanalysis of Khmer ក្រៀល kriəl (or kriel), interpreting the initial k- as equivalent to the Thai wildlife prefix กะ- kà- or กระ- krà-.

For the largest wading birds Thai, like most Southeast Asian languages, has a general name which spans several different families. นกกระสา nók krà-săa 'largewader' is popularly used for cranes in the Gruidae, and also for Ardea great-herons (except for egrets) (Ardeidae), storks (Ciconiidae), and ibises (Threskiornithidae). However, in modern ornithological Thai the name has been restricted to the Ardeidae and Ciconiidae. The name also has an old alternate spelling, นกกะสา nók kà-săa; and is found in other regional languages (compare Lao ນົກກະສາ nōk ká-săa and Khmer ក្រសារ krɑsaa).
