The painted snipe is known as 彩鷸 cǎi-yù ('coloured snipe') in Chinese.

畫眉zha huà-méi zhā 'painted-eyebrowed zha' or 'hwamei zha' is listed as an alternative Chinese name by the Cihai encyclopaedia. The term zha zhā is an old word for some kinds of waterfowl, probably the grebe.
