The tropic birds are known as 熱帶鳥 rèdài-niǎo in Taiwan. The characters 熱帶 rèdài literally mean 'hot zone' or 'torrid band'. The name is a direct translation of the English. Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese all use cognate terms. However, the Mainland has introduced the term méng, which appears to be a revival of an old term (originally a semi-mythical bird), as a replacement for 熱帶鳥 rèdài-niǎo.
