The tropic birds are known as 熱帶鳥 'tropic-zone bird' in Taiwan. The characters 熱帶 literally mean 'hot zone' or 'torrid zone'. The name is a direct translation of the English, possibly via Japanese. Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese all use similar terms. However, Mainland ornithologists now prefer the term 鸏 , which appears to be from the name of an old mythical or semi-mythical bird, the 鸏䴀 .
