The Japanese word for 'tropic bird' is ネッタイチョウ nettai-chō ('tropic zone bird'), written 熱帯鳥. The Japanese name is clearly based on the English and has also been adopted in Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese usage. Mainland China has since adopted a new name for the tropicbirds.
