The skuas or jaegers have traditionally been known as Хулгайч цахлай khulgaich tsakhlai, 'robber gulls' in Mongolian.

The 2007 official names rather confusingly assign them the new name of Хайлгана khailgann. This term was originally an alternative name for the gulls and did not specially refer to the stercorariids at all. The family name of the Stercorariidae, Захлайнхан zakhlainkhan, derives from the word Захлай zakhlai, which is a variant of the ordinary word for gull, Цахлай tsakhlai. Even more confusingly, the name Захлай zakhlai is now generically applied by ornithologists to the Kittiwakes.
