Pre-ornithologically, skuas were not distinguished from terns and gulls (Laridae).

In Malaysian and Indonesian the old, widely distributed name for terns was used for all of these birds:

camar (written as camar ~ cakmar ~ cemar ~ cencamar ~ jamar ~ jemar) 'tern'.

Originally there appears to have been no distinction among the various species and all were called camar.

The names listed here as skua names are all modern inventions:

burung pelangi 'rainbow bird'

skua 'skua' (from English)

camar kejar 'chaser-tern' (from the agressive habits of the skua)
