The Mongolian names for the shrikes are regionally differentiated.

The name used in Mongolian ornithological lists is Дунхай duŋkhai or Дунхай шувуу duŋkhai shuvuu 'dunkhai bird', also seen in the form Дунхаа duŋkhaa.

Inner Mongolian naming

The standard name for the shrikes in Inner Mongolia is Чогчиго chogchig, which has been officially assigned to the Wheatears in ornithological Mongolian.

At least one older list uses the name Цэгцхий tegtskhii for the Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach), although this is normally used for the wagtails.

Under the Inner Mongolian naming, the Long-tailed Shrike (Lanius schach) is not called a Чогчиго chogchig like the other shrikes; it is called a Цэгцхий tsegtskhii (normally applied to the wagtails) or in some dictionaries a Цэгцүүхэй tsegtsüükhei (normally applied to the red finches). In the traditional spelling these two names differ by only one letter. The long-tailed shrike is visually quite similar to the rosefinches, suggesting that (31) version (Цэгцхий tsegtsgii 'wagtail') could be a misprint, but in fact, Inner Mongolian dictionaries give Цэгцхий as having two meanings: 'redfinch' and 'wagtail'. Moreover, the large 5-volume Mongolian dictionary defines Цэгцүүхэй as meaning 'a finch similar to a shrike; a wagtail' (Чогчиготой төстэй бялзуухай; цэгцгий).

内蒙古动物志 (第四卷 鸟纲 雀形目) Fauna Inner Mongolia (Volume 4 Aves Passerines) gives the non-existent term ᠲᠣᠩᠭᠠᠢ тонгой toŋgoi instead of ᠲᠣᠩᠭᠠᠷ тонгор toŋgor 'plover', but this appears to be an error.
