General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

The Vietnamese word for 'shrike' is Chim bách thanh, a borrowing from Chinese meaning 'hundred sounds/voices' (百聲 / 百声 bǎi shēng). Alternative names for the shrikes are Chim chàng làng and Chim quích.

What is interesting is how the Vietnamese name parallels the characters used in Japanese to write モズ mozu, the Japanese name for the shrikes. In Japanese, it was common practice to adopt the the entire Chinese name in order to write Japanese bird names. In the case of the shrikes, one of the most popular ways of writing the native name モズ mozu is 百舌鳥, meaning 'hundred-tongue bird', which suggests that 百舌鳥 bǎi shé-niǎo'hundred-tongue bird' was one of the Chinese names for the shrike. Curiously, however, Chinese scholars now believe that the name 百舌 bǎi shé ('hundred tongues') traditionally referred not to the shrikes but to the Blackbird, Turdus merula, on account of its talent at mimicking other birds.
