General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Vietnamese word for 'shrike' is Chim bách thanh, a borrowing from Chinese meaning 'hundred sounds/voices' (百聲 / 百声 bǎi shēng). Alternative names sometimes seen for the shrikes are Chim chàng làng and Chim quích.

The Vietnamese name of the shrikes parallels the characters used to write モズ mozu, the Japanese name for the shrikes. In Japanese it was common practice to adopt the the entire Chinese name to write native Japanese bird names, and one of the most popular ways of writing モズ mozu is 百舌鳥, meaning 'hundred-tongue bird'. This suggests that 百舌鳥 bǎi shé-niǎo'hundred-tongue bird' was a Chinese name for the shrike. However, Chinese scholars now hold that the name 百舌 bǎi shé 'hundred tongues' actually referred to the Blackbird, Turdus merula, on account of its talent at mimicking other birds.

The name Chim bách thanh is also used for the Mangrove Whistler (Pachycephalidae).
