General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Many Kazakh, Turkish, and Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The swifts are called Ураацай uraatsai in Mongolian. This appears to be derived from the name Уран хараацай uraŋ kharaatsai 'deft swallow'. Other terms are Тэмээн хараацай temeeŋ kharaatsai 'camel swallow' and Хурын хараацай khuriŋ kharaatsai 'rain swallow' (the latter being similar to the Japanese and Chinese names). As in other languages, the swifts are linguistically closely allied with the swallows.

The regularised names of 2007 give the double-barrelled name Моринураацай moriŋ-uraatsai 'horse swift' to the genus Hirundapus, despite the fact that the name Морин ураацай moriŋ uraatsai was originally given to the Fork-tailed (or Pacific) Swift.

The nest of the swiftlets eaten as a delicacy is known in Mongolian as цагаан үүр tsagaaŋ üür 'white nest'.
