The Bearded Reedling is known as the ヒゲガラ hige-gara 'bearded tit' in Japanese, written 髭雀, where カラ kara (here with the consonant voiced as ガラ -gara) means 'tit'. The use of 'tit' in the name is likely due to the early classification of this species with the tits.

山雀 shān-què, literally meaning 'mountain sparrow', is the Chinese name for the tits. As a component of names it is usually abbreviated to 雀 què, meaning 'sparrow' or 'finch'. 山雀 shān-què is possibly from Japanese 山雀 yama-gara 'finch'.
