Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
Known as 犀鸟 'rhinoceros-birds', the hornbills are found in the far south of China, mainly Yunnan.
Anorrhinus tickelli (Brown Hornbill) has two subspecies: A. tickelli tickelli (Tickell's brown hornbill) and A. tickelli austeni (Austen's brown hornbill). Zheng Guangmei's list of birds, presumably following Peters, divides them into two species, A. tickelli (Rusty-cheeked Hornbill) and A. austeni (Brown Hornbill), of which A. austeni is marked as occurring in China. The Chinese names are:
A. austeni : 白喉犀鸟 'white-throated rhinoceros-bird'.
A. tickelli : 锈颊犀鸟 'rusty-cheeked rhinoceros-bird'.
