Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The Alcidae in general are known as 海雀 ('sea sparrows' or 'sea finches') in Chinese. The name has probably been borrowed from Japanese 海雀 umi-suzume 'sea sparrow'.
The more traditional name 善知鸟 'good tidings bird' is not found in Chinese official names but is a commonly found name for the Rhinoceros Auklet.
