General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

In Vietnamese, the general word for owl is Cú. Scops owls are known as Cú mèo ('cat owls') or Chim mèo ('cat birds'). Owlets are called Vọ or Cú vọ. Generalist dictionaries also list Chim hào as a word for 'owl'.

Ornithologists use the following terminology for owls. The terms Dù dì for the eagle owls and fish owls and Hù for the wood owls appears to be quite specialised. Ordinary dictionaries do not carry these words.
