Jacanas are officially known as 水雉 shuǐ-zhì 'water pheasants'. Alternative names for the bird are 莲角 lián-jiǎo 'lotus horn', from its habit of walking on lotus leaves, and 唙咕 dìgū possibly 'whisper' (reason unknown).
