The bee-eaters are known as ハチクイ hachi-kui, or 'bee-eaters', written in characters (kanji) as 蜂喰 ('bee-eater') The only bee-eater that has been found in Japan is Merops ornatus, with one specimen collected in Miyako-jima in the far south in 1904.
