The dippers are known as 河乌 'river-crow' in ornithological Chinese. The name appears to have been borrowed from Japanese via its written form, i.e., by reading the characters of the Japanese name, 河烏, with the Chinese pronunciation. (The alternative Japanese orthographic form using 川 kawa is passed over as it is not the normal Chinese term for 'river').

Харзлай kharzlai is not found in ordinary dictionaries. The name is possibly derived from the verb харзлах kharzlakh, which means 'stay unfrozen', referring to patches of water that don't freeze in winter. The proposed etymology is lent some credence by the noted tendency of White-throated Dippers to remain at swift hill streams during winter as long as there is open water.
Бидрүүл bidrüül is not found in ordinary dictionaries. The pronunciation is thus uncertain, but it is likely related to the word бидэр meaning 'stripe' or 'pattern'.
This word is not found in the dictionary or on the Internet, but the meaning is clearly 'darkbrown'.
This name forms a single unit. In Mongolian dictionaries it is simply defined as 'a bird that lives in wild steppes and forest' (Тал, ойт хээрээр амьдардаг шувуу).
