General
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The dippers are officially known as 河乌 'river-crow' in Chinese. The name appears to have been borrowed from Japanese via its written form, i.e., by reading the characters of the Japanese name, 河烏, with Chinese pronunciation. (The Japanese alternative orthographic form using 川 is passed over as it is not the normal Chinese term for 'river').
