General names
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Thai names are currently being revised. Comments and corrections are welcome.
Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is normal for Vietnamese bird names to include the word Chim meaning 'bird', even where not indicated in the tables. All bird and animal names can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.
Given the remarkable similarity of the button quails (bustard quails or hemipodes) to the true quails, it's not surprising that both types of bird are customarily called by the same name in pre-scientific language. In order to scientifically distinguish the button quails, the official naming in most languages (including English) treats them as a particular type of quail.
The Vietnamese classification takes the opposite tack. In the official naming, the Vietnamese word for 'quail', (Chim) cun cút or (Chim) cút, is assigned to the button quails rather than the true quails. The true quails are given a new name: Cay, likely from French caille and seldom listed in ordinary dictionaries.
