The button quails are known in Japanese as ミフウズラ mi-fu uzura 'three-striped quails', written 三斑鶉 in Chinese characters. Unlike the Japanese Quail, which is a member of the true quails and is found throughout the main Japanese islands, the button quails are represented by only one species found on islands in the far south of Japan.
