Previously the three barbet families were subsumed under the Capitonidae. Howard and Moore 2003 place the barbets, along with the toucans in the large Ramphastidae family. Sibley and Monroe split the African, American, and Asian barbets and the toucans into separate families. The Asian barbets belong to Megalaimidae. It is more common in Asia to assign the Asian barbets to either Capitonidae or Megalaimidae |
General names
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.
Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.
Vietnamese has two names for the barbets, Thầy chùa, literally meaning 'bonze, Buddhist priest' and Cu rốc. The second name could be interpreted as 'emaciated pigeon', but this does not seem very plausible. Neither term is found in non-specialist dictionaries with the meaning of 'barbet'.
