Previously the three barbet families were subsumed under the Capitonidae. Howard and Moore 2003 place all the barbets, along with the toucans, which are related to the American barbets, in the large Ramphastidae family. Sibley and Monroe split the African, American, and Asian barbets and the toucans into separate families. The Asian barbets belong to Megalaimidae. It is more common in Asia to assign the Asian barbets to either Capitonidae or Megalaimidae. |

The Taiwanese name for the Black-eyebrowed Barbet (Megalaima oorti) was originally the picturesque 五色鳥 'five-coloured bird', which appears to be from Japanese. Recently, however, a variant of the Mainland official name, 擬啄木 , meaning 'pseudo-woodpecker', has been adopted. It is perhaps rather a pity that such an ungainly scientific word for this beautiful bird.
