The Stenostiridae are a small family which in Asia includes a former member of the fantails (Rhipiduridae) and canary-flycatchers from the Muscicapidae. The two species continue to carry the names used at their previous families.

1. The modern Thai name of the Fairy-fantail is นกอีแพรด nók ii-pʰrâeet 'fantail (bird)', which includes the old wildlife prefix อี- ii- with an older name แพรด pʰrâeet 'fantail'. This name is shared with the fantails (Rhipiduridae), with which it was previously classified.

2. The Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher uses the Thai ornithological name for the flycatchers, นกจับแมลง nók càp-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-catcher (bird)'. Apart from the Muscicapidae, this name is also used for the Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae) and the genus Philentoma (Vangidae). These are all called 'flycatchers' in English.

Family name

The family name, which is from the Internet, simply combines the name of the two species that form the family: นกจับแมลงหัวเทา nók càp-ma-laeeŋ hŭa-tʰaw 'grey-headed insect-catcher (bird)' and นกอีแพรดท้องเหลือง nók ii-pʰrâeet tʰóaaŋ-lĕuaŋ 'yellow-bellied fantail (bird)'.
