General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The boobies and gannets are known as 鲣鸟 jiān-niǎo 'bonito birds' in Chinese, based on their habit of flocking above shoals of skipjack tuna (often called bonito). The name was borrowed from Japanese via its written form, i.e., reading the characters of the Japanese name with Chinese readings.

Mongolian: Inner Mongolian dictionaries give Сүл шувуу sül shuvuu 'sul bird' as the Mongolian name for the boobies and gannets. The name gives the appearance of being based on Sula. Cyrillicisation is tentative.
