The only member of the family found on Taiwan, the Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha), is known as the 八色鸟 'eight-coloured bird'. This name is based on the Japanese name for the Fairy Pitta, ヤイロチョウ (八色鳥) ya-iro-tsugumi 'eight-coloured bird'. On the Mainland, the pittas are known as 八色鶇 'eight-coloured thrush'.
