The Japanese word for 'frigate bird' is グンカンドリ gunkan-dori, meaning 'warship bird' and written 軍艦鳥 in Chinese characters. The name is probably modelled on Western usage, either 'frigate bird' or 'man o'war bird'. The Japanese name has spread to both Korean and Chinese usage.
