General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

For some reason -- possibly because a number of these birds are shot as game -- English is amazingly rich in words for the Scolopacidae. The Vietnamese naming is much simpler.

The Vietnamese name for the scolopacids is Chim dẽ (also spelt Chim giẽ or Chim rẽ), which is glossed in the lists as 'snipe'. This term is applied to virtually all species, except for the Tringinae, which are technically known as Chim choắt, a term not found in most non-specialist dictionaries. The Gallinagininae (the actual snipe) are set apart by being called Chim dẽ giun 'worm snipe bird'.

An alternative name for the snipe is Chim mỏ nhác or Chim mỏ nhát (Southern variant), where mỏ means 'bill'. The Woodcock has the alternative name of Chim nhát bà ('grandmother nhat bird').
