General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

For some reason -- possibly because a number of these birds are shot as game -- English is amazingly rich in words for the Scolopacidae. The Vietnamese naming is much simpler.

The Vietnamese name for the scolopacids is Dẽ (also spelt Giẽ or Rẽ). This term is applied to virtually all species, except for the Tringinae, which are technically known as Choắt, a term not found in most non-specialist dictionaries. The Gallinagininae are set apart by being called Dẽ giun ('worm dẽ').

An alternative name for the snipe is Mỏ nhác or Mỏ nhát (Southern variant), where mỏ means 'bill'. The Woodcock has the alternative name of Nhát bà ('grandmother nhat').
