General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

All members of the family are known in Chinese as yīng, a form not likely to be found on its own, especially in speech, where it could easily be misunderstood in a birding context as 'eagle' ( yīng).

Traditionally yīng refers in Chinese to the oriole (also known as the 黄莺 huáng-yīng 'yellow-oriole'). The use of this name for the warblers is possibly due to the influence of Japanese. The Japanese identified their own うぐいす uguisu (Japanese Bush Warbler), a songbird celebrated in poetry as a harbinger of spring, as the poetic equivalent of the Chinese oriole, going so far as to write uguisu with the character . The name was eventually adopted for the family name of the Sylviidae in Japanese -- 鶯科 uguisu-ka -- whence it passed into Chinese ornithological terminology. (See 'Of Orioles and Warblers').

The Chinese names of the Sylviidae have been heavily regularised, neatly corresponding to the scientific genera:

While the official terminology uses yīng, some common birds have more colloquial popular names, especially cage birds such as Acrocephalus orientalis.
