General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Khướư is a general and well-known term for various kinds of babblers in Vietnamese.

The laughing thrushes are well-known as cage birds in Vietnam, most of which are similarly known as Khướư. However, the most famous of the laughing thrushes, the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing Thrush (Garrulax canorus), has its own distinctive name, Họa mi, derived from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi. The Masked Laughing Thrush (Garrulax perspicillatus) also has the distinctive names Bò chao and Liếu điếu (although Bò chao is not found in generalist dictionaries). The White-browed Laughing Thrush (Garrulax sannio) is known as the Bò chiêu, again not found in generalist dictionaries.

In more specialised use, ornithologists assign names to the genera of this huge group as follows:
