General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Chim khướư is a general and well-known term for various kinds of babblers in Vietnamese.

The laughing thrushes are well-known as cage birds in Vietnam, most of which are similarly known as Chim khướư. However, the most famous of the laughing thrushes, the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing Thrush (Garrulax canorus), has its own distinctive name, Họa mi, derived from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi. The Masked Laughing Thrush (Garrulax perspicillatus) also has the distinctive names Chim bò chao and Chim liếu điếu (although Bò chao is not found in generalist dictionaries). The White-browed Laughing Thrush (Garrulax sannio) is known as the Chim bò chiêu, again not found in generalist dictionaries.

In more specialised usage, ornithologists assign names to the genera of this huge group as follows:
