General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Chim chích is used for most members of the family. The grass warblers are known as Chim chiền chiện.

The Vietnamese names have been systematised by ornithologists, although not drastically so.

Vietnamese name Genera
Chích
'warbler'
Cettia / Bradypterus / some Acrocephalus / Phylloscopus
Chích đầu nhọn
'sharp-headed warbler'
Some Acrocephalus
Chích đớp ruồi
'fly-catcher warbler'
Seicercus / Abroscopus
Chích đuôi cụt
'short-tailed warbler'
Tesia
Chích đầm lầy
'marsh warbler'
Locustella

Editors at Vietnamese Wikipedia suggest Chích lá 'leaf warbler' for Phylloscopus and Chích sậy 'reed-warbler' for Acrocephalus. It is not possible to tell whether these names represent some kind of scholarly consensus, or whether they have simply been made up by the editors themselves. All names marked (Wikipedia) should be treated with caution.

Vietnamese names from scholarly sources are themselves, however, also less than satisfactory. In addition to the usual misprints and inconsistencies, there are cases where the same Vietnamese name is used for more than one species (see tables).
