General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Chim đớp ruồi, which quite literally means 'catch-fly bird', is applied to all members of the Muscicapinae.

Chim oanh originally referred to the orioles, but has also been given to the robins, presumably because the robins, like the orioles, are noted songbirds. The word оanh was originally borrowed from the Chinese yīng () 'oriole'.

Chim đuôi đỏ 'red-tail bird' is the name given to the redstarts (Phoenicurus and others).

Chim chích chòe is used for the Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis). The forktails (genus Enicurus) are known as Chim chích chòe nước 'water magpierobin bird'. An alternative name for the forktails given by some non-specialist dictionaries is Chim bù chao.

Chim sẻ bụi, literally 'bush-sparrow bird', is the name given to the stonechats and bushchats.
