General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Many Kazakh, Turkish, and Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

Of the huge assemblage of timaliid species, only three are found in Mongolia. In the Mongolian taxonomy they are assigned to the Paradoxornithidae. Since I have no Mongolian term for Timaliidae, I use the Mongolian term Paradoxornithidae for this family.

In the original official naming, the Bearded Tit and the Vinous-throated Parrotbill were called a 'tits' (Хөх бух khökh bukh, literally 'blue bull') and the Reed Parrotbill was called by the curious name Хургач бор khurgach bor 'shepherd brown'.

In the 2007 official names, the three species are assigned to three different genera, meaning that all three get different names:

Genus Old New
Panurus Хөх бух
khökh bukh
'blue bull (=tit)'
Шагшуургабялзуухай
shagshuurag-byalzuukhai
